Things had changed a lot since the sixties.
Officially it was the same war. RED versus BLU and all that unnecessary formality that went hand in hand with teams of angry mercenaries. Unofficially, things had changed.
The places they went to were no longer the same, Teufort having long since been lost under a hellfire explosion and Upward no longer being upward but more Downward. They’d moved into more urban landscapes and places filled with more vines and trees and animals that wanted to eat you than was pleasant. The old team had been replaced, again and again, with newer and fresher faces. Even the equipment had changed to suit their new battlegrounds.
Mostly, now, the team’s entire faces were covered. The companies had developed experimental gas warfare weapons and the urban areas had become more and more dangerous to be in. It was safe enough for bare skin but breathing it in was deadly.
Their identities more or less remained a secret, much like the speculation the Pyro had been under all that time ago, but the masks they wore allowed them to communicate better than they had before. They knew each other, if by voice alone.
The team’s sense of camaraderie had never faltered, loose friendships being formed over the years they were stuck in the job but it gave them a reason to fight.
